ABHYANGAM

Anointing the body with oil,ghee etc. called as Abhyanga. Generally, simple or medicated oils are extensively used.

Abhyanga (massage therapy) is an important therapeutic method in Ayurveda and is commonly done before pancakarma therapy .

Ayurvedic massage therapy is not just the simple application of oil and massage as it is understood by most people. It involves therapeutic considerations, such as Dosha (bio humors),Dhatu (tissues) , Prakrit i(constitution) and pharmacological considerations. The therapeutic efficacy of massage therapy depends on the appropriate selection of oil according to the disease, prakriti, the skill of therapist,the cooperation of the patient and any restrictions that need to be followed by the patient during and after treatment.

A person should resort to abhyanga every day if he wants to keep healthy. In classics, Abhyanga has been mentioned as the part of Dinacarya (Daily routine).

DHARA (SHIRODHARA / THAKRA DHARA)

It is a process by which herbal oils, medicated milk, buttermilk etc are allowed to flow on the forehead in a special method for about 45 minutes in a day for 7 to 21 days. This treatment is for insomnia, vatha predominated diseases, mental disorders, neurasthenia, memory loss , certain skin diseases etc.

In Thakra Dhara, after giving head massage medicated Buttermilk is poured in an uninterrupted flow from a hanging vessel to the forehead and scalp. This is very good in treating scalp problems like dandruff, Psoriasis, hypertention, Diabetes, hair loss and other skin complaints. This gives head very cooling action and generates sleep.

PATRA PINDA SVEDA (ELAKIZHI)

This is a type of Sveda where in the fomentation is done by heated bolus bags containing leaves of medicinal plants. Popularly known as a Elakizhi

Leaves & powders of medicinal herbs are fried in medicated oil and applied over the body in rhythmic massage.

The leaves generally used are Eranda,Arka,Dhattura,Nirgundi,Sigru,Varuna,Vasa,Karanja,Vrukshamla,Amlavetasa,Tamarind leaves,Satahva,Methika,Cocunut kernal . Patra Pinda Sveda is indicated for Kati sula,Sandhigraha(Stiffness of joints),Muscular Cramps,Amavata,Sandhivata, Lumbar spondylosis, Cervical spondylosis, Frozen shoulder, Sciatica etc .

SIROVASTHI

This is done by pouring certain lukewarm herbal oils into a cap put on the head for 15 to 60 minutes per day according to patient’s conditions for a period of 7 to 14 days. This is highly effective for dryness of nostrils, mouth and throat, facial paralysis, severe headache and other vatha based diseases.

A leather sleeve of about six to eight inches in length is placed on the shaven head of the patient and a band (vartti) tied around the forehead to keep it in place. Kneaded dough is used to line the inside of this sleeve and ensure that it does not leak. Oil is then poured into the sleeve and allowed to remain on the head for a while. The length of time the oil should be kept there is determined by the physicians according to the need. This is very good in the treatment of cervical problems, sleeplessness, migraine and other problems of head, hair loss, tinnitus etc.

KATI VASTI

In this process specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept inside the lower back with herbal paste boundary. This treatment lasts for 45 minutes to 1 hour and it is good for any type of back pain and spinal disorders.

After a full body massage using lukewarm therapeutic oils, specially prepared warm herbal oil is poured over the lower back and retained inside an herbal paste boundary. The healing properties of herbal oils used for this massage deeply cleans and enrich the blood, build and maintain strong muscle and connective tissues and lubricate the joints keeping them flexible and pain free. Kati vasthi alleviates lower back pain and spinal disorders.

PICHU

Sponging the body/head with cotton sponges dipped in medicated oils. Useful for paralysis, rheumatism, nervous breakdown etc. Treatment for Backache, Headache, sleeplessness/insomnia, hypertention and Migraine etc

UDWARTHANAM

A special massage with herbal powders for diseases like hemiplegia, paralysis, obesity (excess fat) and certain rheumatic ailments. Herbal powders are massaged in a special way for 30 to 45 minutes every day for 7 to 28 days. This is considered very good in reducing over weight and controlling cholesterol of the body. It also strengthens muscles and tightens loose skin.

PANCHAKARMA

Major body purification comprising five therapies (Vamana, Virechanam, Basti, Nasyam, Raktamokshana) to balance doshas and rejuvenate.

HERBAL FACIAL

A herbal face pack with specially made herbal powder and fresh cream that helps preventing and avoiding wrinkles and improving the skin tone. Increase fairness using herbal face packs and ayurvedic treatment. Say no to pimples, acne, marks, black circles and darkness.

NASYAM

Drops of medicated oil are administered in each nostril of the patient. This treatment eliminates the toxins from the head and neck region and is useful in curing headaches, migraine, sinusitis, chronic cold , chest congestion, cervical spondylosis ,Facial Palsy etc. It assures lightness of the body and head ensures better sleep. Helps in curing degeneration of cervical vertebrae.

THARPANAM (EYE TREATMENT)

Keeping the medicated Ghee in the eyes for 15-30 minutes within a herbal paste boundary. Enhances better eyesight with less strain, better blood circulation to the eyes and protects the eyes from age related problems.

VASTHI (BASTI)

Basti cikitsa is regarded as the prime treatment modality among the Panchakarma.It is having not only curative action but also preventive and promotive actions.Basti is not merely the enema,rather it is highly complex,sophisticated and systemic therapy having wider range of therapeutic actions and indications.

Basti indicates the procedure in which the drugs are administered through the anal canal and it is retained for certain period of time ,drag the waste matters from all over the body into the colon and eliminated them out of the body resulting into the desired results.

This is a treatment in which prescribed medicated oils, decoctions, herbal preparations, extracts are applied through the rectum. The process resembles the enema, but the purpose is different. Used in the cure of arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia, numbness and constant constipation, degenerative, neurological problems, chronic back pain, infertility, sciatica, obesity, digestive disorders, ulcer. It purifies the body, maintains health and longevity.

KSHEERA DHOOMAM

A fomentation process with medicated cow milk that helps in eliminating facial paralysis disorders and other nervous disorders of the face and speech disorders, cervical spondylosis, spastic disorders and neurological problems.

In this treatment medicated milk is heated and the steam is passed over the entire body. It is effective for numbness, headache, allergies, nervous disorder and paralysis.

PIZHICHIL

Application of lukewarm herbal oils over the body by 2 to 4 masseurs in a special rhythmic style for about 60 to 90 minutes per day for 7 to 21 days. It is a highly rejuvenating treatment useful in all cases of nervous disorders, treatment for paralytic, rheumatic, diabetic patients etc and as a rejuvenate course.

In this treatment lukewarm medicated oil is applied on the body of the patient lying on the "Dharapathi". Oil dipped pieces of cloth are squeezed by hand and the oils rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by masseurs on either side. The medicated oil is pressed out of the cloth uniformly over the body at a defined height and massaged by skillful hands.

This treatment is indicated in stiffness and pain of joints and limbs, dislocation of joints, paralytic conditions and in ladies with a history of uterine inertia in earlier deliveries, complaints associated with Menopause. Many persons also undergo this treatment for rejuvenation and preservation of health to offset early aging. Sclerotic changes can be prevented by this treatment.

NJAVARATHEPPU

Process by which part of the body or whole body is perspired by application of Njavara rice pudding. Treatment for Muscular dystrophy, skin problems, muscle toning etc. Helps in improving the skin texture and muscle tone.

VAMANAM

Major Body purification procedure in Panchakarma therapy. When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, cold, cough, Vamanam is administrated to eliminate the Kapha causing the excess mucus. All Kapha related diseases are cured by this therapy. This process requires good attention and skilled assistance.

In chronic skin diseases like Psoriasis also vamanam is administered.

ANJANAM

Rejuvenation Therapy of neck & above by administration of Herbal extract to the eye. Application of Herbal extract with Honey or Rosewater inside the eyes helps to remove foreign bodies, removes itching and burning sensation in the eyes due to exposure to allergens.

VIRECHANAM (BODY PURIFICATION THERAPY)

Oral administration of medicine to purify the whole body to attain proper balance of vatha, pitha and kapha based on the panchakarma. Virechanam is the method of cleaning and evacuation of the bowels through the use of purgative medicines. It eliminates excess bile toxins from the mid zone of the body. Hence for many of the digestive ailments, people resort to this form of treatment.

When the digestive tract is clean and toxic-free, it benefits the entire body system. As a result, the person's appetite increases, body strength enhances and the person becomes active and buoyant. Thus virechanam also functions as an excellent rejuvenative procedure.

AVAGAHAM

Body is anointed with medicated oil and plunge bath given in a tub filled with either the decoction of vatahara leaves suitable for patient's condition.

Relieves back pain and provides muscular relaxation. For the diseases of spinal cord, hip and lower back. Also helpful in gynaecological conditions.

UROVASTHI

In urovasthi specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept in herbal paste boundary on the chest. An effective treatment for respiratory problems, heart disease and muscular chest pains.

After a gentle massage on the body, a mixture specially prepared warm herbal oil is poured over the chest and retained inside an herbal paste boundary for 45 minutes. The healing properties of herbal oils used for this massage enriches the blood and builds and maintains strong muscle and connective tissues. A stimulating and therapeutic treatment for muscular chest pain.

NJAVARA KIZHI

In this method of healing, the body is forced to perspire using Njavara and other herbal medicines for 60-90 minutes for 7 to 21 days according to the requirements. A special type of rice called Njavara is cooked in milk and herbal decoction and packed in small cotton bundles. With this the whole body is massaged.

This improves circulation, relieves muscular stress and aches. Effective for rheumatism, joint pains, emaciation of limbs and muscles, and is a good rejuvenating treatment that enhances skin texture and glow.

DHANYAMLA DHARA

Dhanyamla Dhara is a special type of Dhara treatment in which warm herbal liquid is poured all over the body in a rhythmic way through a special vessel for 1 hour daily for 7 to 14 days. It is a remedy for hemiplegia, paralysis, rheumatic complaints and Vata predominant diseases.
